Before I have to look. Are we or projects using CS making use of S3TC
any more?

Yes, pretty extensively I think (dxt texture compression).

I think I will look at this and the whole patent thing and the fact it
is forbidden from Fedora as a personal project for now.

It's only an issue if we implement the algorithm ourselves, which I don't
believe we do. Conversion to DXT is done by vendor tools, decompression is
done by vendor drivers.

Gotta agree there – it’s only an issue if we actually implement S3TC ourselves – from a quick check this doesn’t seem to be the case as we simply relay the compressed data (produced by some 3rd party tool) to the driver for further processing.
